Review of Winchester 22-41284 Model 70 Commemorative Bowie in Tin

This high quality knife had a fantastic look and packaging, not to mention the world-wide reputation of the Winchester- alas, now defunct as a firearm manufacturer- brand. Winchester and this knife manufacturer did not let me down! The balance, edge, steel and wood quality and fit were fantastic! The set has a great feel in the hands and high quality crafting is evident. The tin that the set comes packaged in has the old fashioned high quality artwork that Winchester used in its advertising faithfully reproduced in great detail. All in all, the set should be a pleasure for knife enthusiasts!

Review of Gerber 06425 Chameleon II Medium Serrated

i bought this knife to orginally give to a friend, but when it came in i liked it so much i decided to keep it for myself and get him something else...the knife came razor sharp and has kept it's edge...the hole in the knife is great for controlling the knife...works great for skinning...would reccommend to all, only down side is you may want to get the next larger size...this one turned out to be just a little small...but works great for most jobs...

Review of Gerber 22-41967 Mini Convert Knife with Serrated Edge

Great little knife for the price. Low riding clip, means this knife rides low in the pocket. Open assist requires some practice, but once you get used to it opens very fast. Again remember the price, this isn't a Benchmade, but it does come with G10, is very light, and is of moderate quality, buy this over that gas station knife, but could use a larger lanyard hole.
Recommend that you use the safety when placing knife in pocket, open assist will open the blade as it shifts and moves around in the pocket. Gave myself a nice little cut because of that, but that was my own fault, not the knife's.

Review of Winchester 22-41206 Large Bowie Knife with Sheath

My wife got me this knife for my birthday because I mainly use small and mid-sized knives and have so far avoided getting a taste for the huge Bowies. She wanted to see if I liked this type without spending much. The answer is yes, I like it a lot.

It's massive and nose-heavy, with the point of balance right at the big full-finger choil in front of the guard. This weight-forward configuration makes the knife very eager to chop, and I immediately complied by destroying some lemons, potatoes, corn cobs, and an old pine 2x6. The edge was shaving-sharp right out of the box, but my abuse resulted in some bright spots where the edge was visibly dinged. I restored it in under a minute with an Accusharp carbide-V sharpening gadget.

The primary bevel is a half-flat or "saber" grind, which emphasizes strength over slicing. Still, the knife excelled at the above-named kitchen tasks, as well as slicing celery, bell peppers, and meat. It was not quite optimal, however, for dicing onions. The thick, heavy blade tended to bind in such firm material and was a bit fatiguing to use. Still, it got the job done, and I found the radically clipped point very nimble and handy for piercing. I only wished I had a coconut to split.

I have my doubts about the edge-holding ability of this knife, as it is made from obviously inexpensive 420-J2 stainless steel subjected to who-knows-what heat treatment, and I have managed to ding it up a bit initially. But it certainly isn't brittle, which would spell uselessness for a knife like this. I imagine that a few sessions with the Accusharp might re-profile the edge to a more durable angle, but only time will tell.

The package says it is made for the Winchester brand by "Carolina Knife and Tool," which I hear is a cheaper label of Gerber knives-- the Ford to Gerber's Lincoln, if you will. So I would imagine that they have some idea of how to make a good knife, even if they are doing it in China.

The handle scales are Pakkawood, an engineered wood laminate that behaves much like hardwood but is inert, which is to say that it will not move or shrink or crack. It's stained to look like rosewood and finished with a tough, glossy lacquer or polyurethane. Together with the brass guard and pins, it makes for a more attractive package than other inexpensive "survival" or "tactical" knives. My only complaint is the finger ridges, a bit of over-engineering that can only detract from the knife's versatility.

The sheath is heavy, stiff Cordura nylon with plastic reinforcement at the throat and two retaining straps with snaps. It's not too fancy, just a secure, durable, weatherproof sheath that rides nicely on the belt. It does have a few nasty bits of Hide of the Nauga around the snaps, which is no big deal.

I wouldn't hesitate to carry this knife in the woods, as long as I could also carry a sharpening gadget like the Accusharp or the Meyerco Sharpen-It to allay my reservations about the blade material. If you had to choose one do-everything backwoods knife, this really would not be a bad choice, as it is capable of heavy chopping as well as more delicate tasks like slicing vegetables. To step up at all in the Bowie market would require triple the price at the very least, and so I'd say this is a great knife for seeing if you're interested, and it'll get some work done while you're at it. It has certainly whetted my appetite for more of these big knives.

2 well made tools.

the utility knife is great and sees regular use.easy to open, easy to close, standard utility blades and it's very compact. 5 stars.

the multi-tool replaced alot of individual tools in my on-site kit and has been very handy.it's very compact and feels rugged.some of the tools are difficult to open (very stiff) and/or can't be opened without opening the tool in front of them.not a huge deal, but not ideal. 4 stars.

Review of Gerber Legendary Blades 22-00803 Mini Aluminum Super Knife

I bought ten of these for my buds (and one for me) for Christmas, it is basically a miniature folding box cutter. It is a super sharp, true "pocket" knife that has a detachable feature so you can pull it off your keychain for easy use. After two weeks mine failed, I checked with the friends that I had given them to and about half of the knives would not open, or close easily.I sent mine back to Gerber, who responded to my email in an insultingly discourteous manner. They did replace it, but it cost to ship it back, and I can now no longer trust it. For manly men who "use" and abuse a pocket knife as a tool, the idea of a replaceable blade is great. I found a full size Husky brand at Home Depot for about the same price as the mini, as a bonus it came packaged with ten replacement blades. Two of the guys that I gave the minis bought different fullsize knives, one a "Kobalt" from Lowe's that looked as if it came out of the same Chinese factory as my Husky. The big ones come with belt clips.I liked mine so well I bought another to keep in the Jeep. The minis are cute, look nice on your keychain, but don't think that it is a viable tool. Save your money on this one!

Review of Gerber 22-80066 Carnivore Blood Tracking Light, TRAX Blood Tracking Technology with Sheath

The Carnivore is a waste of money and does not work as well in finding a blood trail as a cheap flashlight. I poured a blood trail as a test of the Carivore, with blood from a recently killed deer. Despite the fact that I knew where the trail lead I could not follow it with the Carnivore. I contacted Gerber to see if I was using the light correctly and after emailing them twice finally get what can only be described as a lame excuse as to why the light does not work in all situations.
I contacted Cabela's and was informed they have stopped selling the light because of all of the complaints from customers. Cabela's sent a shipping label to me and paid the postage for me to return the Carnivore. Hats off to Cabela's but shame on Gerber for continuing to sell this piece of junk.

Product Description:
Illuminating a blood trail is important when tracking wounded game through thick woods and underbrush. For a long time now experienced hunters have known that a combination of red and white or red and blue lighting would help to illuminate a blood trail. The Gerber Carnivore Blood Tracking Light incorporates a bright Xenon light to follow a blood trail in low light conditions and can be easily switched with one hand for night tracking by utilizing the Carnivore's four red and four blue LED bulbs. The sturdy plastic casing will withstand the rough conditions of backwoods tracking and comes with a lanyard attachment, a handy nylon sheath, a built-in battery indicator and instructions. Uses 4 AA batteries. --C. Dwight Barnett

Review of Winchester 22-41602 Mini Win-Frame Mini Tool

I've owned this tool for over a year now and it has bailed me out multiple times. Keep in mind that it's not a replacement for a real set of tools. The purpose (at least in my opinion) is to have quick access to some sort of tool without having to carry several pounds of extra gear. And for this purpose, at this price, this tool is excellent.

Pros:
Small & lightweight
Carrying case that you can put on your belt and you won't even notice the tool there
Spring-loaded pliers
Good selection of tools

Cons:
If you apply too much force, the flatheads will twist a little (but I mean A LOT of force and I tried it on very large screws that this tool wasn't designed for).
The phillips head could be just a bit larger
The flatheads are a little too thick for their size.

The pliers are a pleasure to use and grip well. I am 6', but didn't feel that the tool was too small for my hands. Overall, this is an excellent multitool for what it is and for its price - which is less than half of a comparable tool. And it looks good too. I am going to get two more, for the car and for the kayak.

Review of Gerber Legendary Blades 22-41346 Big Woody Multi Tool

My first multi-tool that I had got major use, from fixng computers to cutting ropes while on a mission trip in the Guyanese Interior. It had become so attached to my multi-tool, that I reached for that, my flashlight, my bottle of water and my bible everytime I went out. We used this tool to fix and cut so many things while on the trip it was just unbelievable. Actually one of the villagers saw me using it so much that he asked me about it. I eventually left it in Guyana with him.

I felt lost for a couple months after without it, but on another visit to the US I was able to pick up another one. It didn't cost much, and I'm not afraid to give it away again, as I know it'll find as much use in someone else's hands as it does in mine. Basically if you want a quality multi-tool that gives you as much bang for your buck as those more expensive tools, this is it. And with such a low price you can buy more than one, so you can give them away when you get the chance.

I still use my new tool, with the wood inlay on the handle for fixing computers, assembling desks, cutting wire for network cables and cutting packaging. Soon I'll have the opportunity once again to use it in the bush, but for now, it does all that I need it to do, and I'll recommend without hestitation.

Review of Gerber 22-41513 Freehand Multi Plier

The first thing that shocked me when I started handling this item new out of the box is the pits and scratches in the larger tools (knife, saw, ruler). They looked used, even though I bought this brand new.I then looked down at my hands and saw that they were covered in the black finish - it was like I had been reading a newspaper. The finish comes right off on your fingers.Lastly, the scissors do not fold smoothly into place inside of the handle. When fully closed, the tip of the blade still extends outside, giving a sharp edge to either cut yourself on or to snag on things coming out of your pocket or sheath.I've never returned something to amazon before...looks like there's a first time for everything. Here I thought Gerber meant quality, not trash.

Review of Gerber 22-01506 Clutch Mini Pliers Keychain Tool - Special Ops Gray-Box

I purchased this right before Christmas for a little something for myself. I work in retail, but am amazed at how often having a screw driver or set of pliers at hand would come in handy. I wanted something that was small enough to fit in my pocket so I could carry it with me daily, but could still be used for practical applications.
This thing has come in handy so often. Whether it is loosening/tigtening a Phillips head screw, opening a plastic package, filing my nails, or removing staples from ridiculously thick packs of paper, this has served me well all around.

The only down side to this is the extras are really difficult to open at first. If I were smart I would put a dab of WD40 on it. Also, the finish on it has started to flake off where it rubs against keys and what not.

I do wish that they would include the split ring with it or provide a larger eye so that I could fit it on my key ring much easier.
If you need something like you work in construction or something, then you probably need something heavier. But for something that you can keep with you to use daily, I recommend this.

Review of Gerber 30-000027 CRT Cut and Release Tool

I do animal rescue and transport work and when transporting animals in metal crates we sometimes use plastic ties to wire the crates together for stability. When we deliver the animals and want to fold the crates down we need something to cut the ties with. We sometimes use pocket knives but decided to try one of the Cut and Release Tools. I have been using it now for a few months and find it working very well. It cuts most size ties on the first try and is small enough to slip in a shirt pocket.
It does not feel real sturdy in the hand but so far it has worked as advertised under some trying conditions. If it breaks in the next few months I will edit this review and bring the reader up to date.

Review of Gerber 22-01968 Remix Clip Folder Knife with Fine Edge

I like the knife for the most part, but I do not advise buying until Gerber fixes the way it locks! The plastic in the spine bends and fails if any rope cutting force is applied. Love the edge and the way it feels that I give 5 stars but Locking is a complete 0. Suggest fixed blade version of this knife if you must have. I recommend Gerber trades Either the plastic in the spine with stainless or aluminum or redesigns with lever lock back which would make it easier to open.
