Review of Winchester Illumination LED Flashlight and Flexi-Light Combo #22-999235

The flex light is great for reading in the dark, it's a little heavy so you need to hook about 50 pages into the clip to get it to stay on the book (not a problem if you're reading hard cover). And while I haven't used it for this yet, it will be amazing for working on computers, or in other small metallic spaces, it's got a magnet in the base so you can attach it to the bottom of your case and move the light around. It's really bright, almost too bright when reading, but good for other work. It uses button batteries (the little round disk ones) so it'll be simi-expensive to replace those (cheaper to buy a new flashlight) but they'll last pretty long, especially with an LED.

The big flashlight is ok, nothing really special. It's only a single LED, so it's not that bright, but it works well enough for one person (it's not really bright enough to light up a path for several people walking side-by-side). Because of the lens they have in there it limits the wide angle of the LED into a bright circle, so it's not like a bulb where it's bright in the center then fades as it moves the five feet towards the edge of the light circle. Holding the flashlight about three feet off the ground make about a ten inch circle of light. So like I said, enough for one person walking, or for use around the home or in a tent or something. My only real problem with it is the on/off button is basically flush with the case, so it's hard find the button to turn the thing on when you can't see it.
Totally worth the money.

I work at Keck Observatory where suddenly getting stuck in the dark is a regular experience, and some places you can get stuck could be quite dangerous.You learn quickly to always have a light of some sort at the ready.I have carried a Gerber Infinity for a few months now and it is exactly what I needed, very small, it fits in a side pouch to my cell phone case, thus I never forget to have it with me.The single LED is quite bright, easily bright enough to walk around with or to work with, though not as bright as the bigger LED flashlights.I still have yet to replace the battery after three months despite regular use.At first I did not like the lack of a rear button switch like some lights, but have found that the screw type switch never gets accidentally activated and now prefer it.Very solid construction, nothing cheap about how it is put together.I can wholeheartedly recommend it!

Review of Gator, Drop Point, 154CM, Plain

I wanted a knife with a premium steel blade. The Gator, with its 154cm steel blade seemed to be such, and at a reasonable price. The blade is very nicely made, as is the rubbery grip. But the blade moves slightly inside the grip. That is, when you press down on the knife for cutting, the blade moves slightly but noticeably backward within the handle. This is not side to side motion as might sometimes occur (there is none in this knife). The motion is as if the knife wants to open just a little further than normal as you press down on it. It's not a big big deal, but it definitely subtracts from my liking of the knife.

Just spoke to Gerber Blades (2/13/08) and they said to send the knife back. I will update this review pending the results. Also, the blade definitely says '154cm' on it, not ATS-34 as listed here.

March 5: Gerber returned a brand new knife which has exactly the same problem. I guess that's how they all are. I like the blade so I will live with the small discrepancy.

If you're looking for a small knife without breaking the bank, this is the knife to get.I've searched around and other companies sell knives just like this one for $100 and more.I don't know what makes them so special, but I can assure this knife is quality for only $25.My coworker has a knife similar to this one that he paid over $100 for, and it has lasted him a couple of years. But even if this knife only lasts half that long it's still the better buy; and judging by the quality, it should last a while longer than that.

Review of Winchester 22-41793 Parfive Titanium Nitride Tanto Knife

What a great looking knife right off the bat, it seems like the frame and the clip are well made and definitely clean looking. but when I try to flick the knife open it barely moves, I immediately figure that maybe it was just assembled too tightly as the factory. First you have to remove the belt clip to access the second screw holding the blade in, I loosen the screw up a little and it doesn't do any good, Winchester did a really lousy job making the shims for either side of the blade. The one on the liner lock side is fine, but the two that they used on the opposite side are just absolutely terrible, one is a dirty clear plastic shim, the other is an even thinner piece of white plastic and when used in conjunction with one another they just take up too much space and make a lot of resistance for the opening and closing blade. To remove either shim makes the blade rub on the inner frame. The blade comes as dull as a butter knife but it sharpens right up. But the coating on the blade is already wearing off where the straight part of the blade turns to the tanto tip and I have have the knife less than a week.

Overall, I would say that the knife is an OK buy for sub $10 but any more than that and you are taking a gamble, i don't plan on carrying this knife very often unless I can make some good shims for it because a pocket knife needs to be both easy to access and reliable and I have a feeling this will be neither.

Review of Profile, Black Rubber Handle, Black Blade, Plain

Have you ever asked yourself "what would be a good EDC knife and survival knife and a knife that will everything I need it to do"? To be honest I have many times and I find that this blade right here answers the call. I have split many pieces of wood with this baby and it goes through them like a charm. Granted the blade is only 3.5 inches but it gets a lot done. The best test for a blade is to take it outside and do some extensive test on it and that's what I did. I split wood with it by beating near tip or on tip with a wood baton and the blade still held up and I was going through some really tough wood as you often encounter when going out in the woods. Another test I did was chopping away at my wood so I could split it and again the blade came through with flying colors. Then once when I got done getting all my wood split and ready to burn, I realized I did not have a shovel so what I did was I dug a hole with the blade for the fire pit and again the blade did awesome. Then once when I got the fire going I needed more wood so I got more chopped it then split it and it was still charging very hard after I abused it by digging in the cold ground. Oh yeah by the way the temperature was about 30 or 40 degrees and by the time it hit full on night it was about 25 30 degrees so that is very good testing conditions for a blade.
Currently this is my EDC blade right now because I trust this blade with my life because it has everything I want in a good survival knife. And what still continues to amaze me is how light weight the blade is (6.1 oz). Also how compact the blade is too (8.56).Also I like the tang in the blade too because it's a full tang and a blade that has a full tang is going to last so much longer. Here is an example the KA-Bar Marine fighting knife. It does not have a full tang so I would have to say that this blade is stronger than the KA-Bar because that blade does not have a full tang. If you don't want to carry this blade just keep it in your vehicle and maybe you just might need it. Also here is a tip, put electrical tape around the handle because when you are chopping or splitting wood the energy transfers to your hand and it hurts. Reason being is that the tang is so good that it sticks out about 4 millimeters but I would rather have that than a crappy tang. Also put electrical tape around the thumb break but not on the thumb break just on the nylon and it makes it easier to gain access to the blade and putting it away.

The sheath they give you is made out of nylon denier cordura and that is the strongest fabric you can basically get. Also in the sheath they give you a non removable plastic insert that way every time you place the blade in it won't mess up the nylon. The sheath is also able to go through a belt but sadly is not MOLLE compatible. Thanks for reading I know I did not cover everything but I did not want to make it longer than it already is. They also make a folding version, but i have not used that one yet. Maybe Gerber would send it to me and i could test it.

Review of Gerber 05898 Serrated Ridge Knife

This design 'blantantly cop[ies] Ed Hal[l]igan's design' because he sold it to Gerber, like most intelligent knife makers do to make a living.

If you need a small blade to open boxes, bags and cut up to about 3/8" rope - this is the ticket.At sub-$20 it's practically disposable compared to when the K.I.S.S. design was released.It's certainly not designed for hard tasks, to be used all day long or for self defense - if you need those functions look elsewhere.The blade can open in your pocket and may while digging in pockets for other stuff - check out the Gerber "Trendy" model if that is a concern for you.Also the black will wear off quickly so if you want 'longterm pretty' get a full stainless knife.
